A little about my career creating comics

Thanks for checking my website.

Although it sounds like a long time—and it is—I created my first fanzine (script, drawings, inking, halftones, photocopying, layout, and sales) in 1999 with a short story that combined an antihero and… Aliens. From that moment on, as the great John Hammond said in Jurassic Park, “spared no expense” (in my case, my youth) to create stories, manage projects and an online community, produce collaborative comic magazines, and even—thanks to seed funding from CORFO—publish Chilean comics on cell phones throughout Latin America, long before smartphones and webtoons! Yes, it sounds like fiction, but it’s true… even though there was no instagram to post it on, it happened. I wrapped up that phase of my life by creating and publishing (once again) a series of two magazines and a small book of Chilean comics called “Ciudadela,” which featured stories crafted by young creative teams—comprising writers and artists—who were just starting out in the world of comics. Some of them are now top professionals in the world of video games and illustration and/or established authors.

Since 2008, I’ve been working almost every day of the year coloring comics for international clients, thanks to publishers, writers, and artists who have trusted in what I can bring to their projects in various countries, mainly the U.S. and New Zealand. Since it’s a rather solitary job, I developed my skills as a manager and coordinator during that time by co-founding NGI CHILE, the Chilean Graphic Narrative and Illustration Association, through which we were able to learn various ways of creating and publishing comics directly from the knowledge and experience of foreign publishers. This initiative was selected as one of Chile’s 50 most innovative projects in 2012, which was a pleasant surprise for an online group created to strengthen the Chilean comics industry.

After several years working as a comic book colorist, I decided to return to creating stories, this time in the graphic novel format, where I co-author with talented Chilean illustrators. Since 2016, I have published nine books in Chile, two of which have been released in foreign markets, and two others have won awards in the fields of literature and comics.

One of the things that has made me happiest lately is spending time with schoolchildren throughout Chile to promote the Futbolitas series, which I’ve been publishing with Zig-Zag since 2022. While I’m working on the latest installment of that series, I’m also working on other books I’ve co-authored, as well as some for companies, foundations, and organizations that understand the potential of storytelling to strengthen their brand, advance their mission, and preserve their heritage.

If I had to describe the kind of books I publish, I’d say they’re children’s and young adult books. For the little ones, entertaining and relatable stories; and for young adults, stories that go beyond what’s covered in history textbooks.
